New Zealand Confirms Final Chlorpyrifos Ban Date

According to a World Trade Organization (WTO) notification issued on 15 September 2026, New Zealand has confirmed that its restrictions on chlorpyrifos will enter into force on 8 July 2027.
Chlorpyrifos (CAS No. 2921-88-2) is an organophosphate pesticide used as a broad-spectrum insecticide on agricultural crops and for biosecurity purposes.
Earlier EPA decision
In July 2025, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) decided to revoke all approvals for substances containing chlorpyrifos after having determined that the risks associated with their use outweighed the benefits.
Different phase-out periods were established depending on the substance and its use. Most chlorpyrifos substances have already been phased out. However, one granular product used to control grass grub was granted an 18-month phase-out period due to its greater benefits. Import and manufacture of this product must cease by 8 January 2027 and use and disposal of remaining stocks must be completed by 8 July 2027.
Final phase-out deadline
The Stockholm Convention restriction will enter into force internationally on 16 December 2026. For New Zealand, however, the implementation date is 8 July 2027 to coincide with the end of the extended phase-out for the remaining chlorpyrifos product.
