ECHA Maintains Glyphosate Classification Following Review

On 8 September 2026, the European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) adopted an opinion concluding that new carcinogenicity data do not warrant classifying glyphosate as carcinogenic under the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation.
New Study Does Not Alter Previous Assessment
The review was initiated after a study published by the Ramazzini Institute in June 2025 reported increased incidences of certain tumours in rats exposed to glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides. At the European Commission’s request, RAC assessed whether these findings affected its previous opinion on the substance. The assessment also considered comments received during a targeted consultation held from 2 to 31 March 2026.
RAC concluded that the new study does not change its 2022 hazard assessment. Glyphosate therefore retains its harmonised classification as causing serious eye damage and being toxic to aquatic life, while classification for carcinogenicity remains unwarranted.
Next Steps and Regulatory Status
The opinion will be published within the next few months and submitted to the European Food Safety Authority and the European Commission. Glyphosate remains approved as an active substance in EU plant protection products until 15 December 2033.
