On July 1, 2026, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released draft guidance on reducing potential risks associated with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) in biosolids (treated sewage sludge). If finalized, the guidance would provide voluntary recommendations for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), related facilities, landowners, farmers, state and Tribal water agencies, and the public to support the safe management of biosolids.

The draft guidance outlines voluntary measures to help minimize potential risks from PFOA and PFOS in biosolids. These include identifying and reducing PFAS sources, monitoring biosolids for PFOA and PFOS, avoiding land application near sensitive areas or on higher-risk agricultural land, and considering alternative management practices where appropriate. It also includes recommendations for wastewater treatment facilities, land appliers, and the public to support informed decision-making.
Public Consultation
EPA has opened a 60-day public comment period, ending September 4, 2026, to gather stakeholder feedback on the draft guidance. The agency will consider the comments received to help inform future actions related to the management of PFOA and PFOS in biosolids.
