China cosmetic Cosmetic Standardization National Medical Products Administration NMPA Cosmetic Products
On 22 May 2026, the National Institutes for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC) officially released an errata notice for the Safety and Technical Standards for Cosmetics (2015 Edition). following a review by the Cosmetic Standardization Technical Committee under the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). The corrections mainly address typographical errors and technical inaccuracies in the wording of Chapter 4, which covers physicochemical testing methods.
Key Updates to the Cosmetic Safety and Technical Standards
According to the announcement, several provisions in the physicochemical testing methods section contained textual errors that could potentially affect laboratory implementation and interpretation. Relevant organizations and testing institutions are required to apply the corrected wording specified in the official errata table.
Main Revisions Included in the Errata
Correction of Buffer Solution Terminology
In the pH testing method (Section 1.1, Clause 3.1 and Appendix A), the term "Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate Standard Buffer Solution" has been corrected to "Potassium Hydrogen o-Phthalate Standard Buffer Solution."
Correspondingly, the term "phthalate" has been revised to "o-phthalate."
Revision of Sample Weight for Multi-Element Analysis
In the testing methods for 43 elements, including lithium, in cosmetics and toothpaste (Sections 1.6 and 1.16), the sample preparation requirement has been updated from 0.2 g of sample diluted to 50 ml to 0.5 g of sample diluted to 50 ml.
Correction of Asbestos Testing Procedure
In the analytical sample preparation procedure for the asbestos testing method in cosmetics (Section 2.27, Clause 6.2.1), the transferred sample volume has been corrected from 20 l to 20 μl to ensure consistency with standard laboratory practice.
Regulatory Background
The Safety and Technical Standards for Cosmetics (2015 Edition) is one of the fundamental technical references for safety assessment and laboratory testingof cosmetic products in China. The latest errata aims to eliminate ambiguities and ensure the accurate implementation of standardized testing procedures.
