BIS Invites Comments on Revised Heat-Resistant Aluminium Paint Standard

On August 25, 2026, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued a Wide Circulation Draft proposing the first revision of IS 13183:1991, ‘Aluminium Paint, Heat Resistant – Specification’. The draft has been prepared by the Paints, Varnishes and Related Products Committee (CHD 20) and invites comments and suggestions from stakeholders for further improvement.  

The deadline for submitting comments is October 24, 2026. 

Background 

Aluminium paint is primarily used as a finishing coat for chimneys, stacks, boilers, pipes, furnaces, and other equipment or structures that are exposed to elevated temperatures. It is designed to provide heat resistance and corrosion protection in harsh marine and industrial environments. 

Scope 

This standard specifies the requirements, sampling, and test methods for heat-resistant aluminium paint designed to withstand solvents, normal weathering, and temperatures up to 600 °C. 

Key changes 

a) Lead limit specified for health protection. 
b) Test method references have been updated. 
c) A safety precaution has been added to the marking requirements. 
d) A quenching test has been added to assess heat resistance. 
e) VOC requirements and terminology have been introduced. 
f) Indian Standard references and amendments have been updated. 

Grades 

The material shall be classified into the following grades based on its maximum service temperature:  

a) Grade 1: up to 600 ℃  

b) Grade 2: up to 400 ℃  

c) Grade 3: up to 200 ℃

Packing and Marking 

  • Packing: The paint is to be packed as agreed between the purchaser and the supplier. 

  • Marking: Containers must include the following information: name, grade, manufacturer, volume, batch/lot no., manufacture date, lead/VOC content, and safety warnings. 

  • BIS Mark: Products that conform to the standard may be certified under the BIS regulations.
