On 27 and 28 January 2026, five East African Community (EAC) partner states - Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda - notified the World Trade Organization that Tanzania has officially adopted several Draft East African Standards (DEAS) as national standards. The adoption reinforces Tanzania’s commitment to product quality, consumer safety, and regional harmonization within the EAC. The standards, previously notified to WTO Members under the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement, were formally adopted on 31 October 2025 and are now published as Tanzania Standards (TZS).

The adopted standards include:

  1. Synthetic Laundry Detergent Paste (DEAS 788:2022, Second Edition)

Adopted as TZS 1649:2025/EAS 788:2022, this standard specifies quality and safety requirements for synthetic laundry detergent pastes.

  1. Synthetic and Combined Liquid Hand Wash (DEAS 812:2022, Second Edition)

Adopted as TZS 1779:2025/EAS 812:2022, this standard sets out specifications for synthetic and soap-combined liquid hand washes. It was notified to multiple EAC countries including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.

  1. Synthetic Liquid Laundry Detergent (DEAS 816:2022, Second Edition)

Adopted as TZS 1782:2025/EAS 816:2022, this standard establishes specifications for synthetic liquid laundry detergents.

  1. Soap Noodles (DEAS 815:2022, Second Edition)

Tanzania adopted this standard as TZS 1781:2025/EAS 815:2022, which defines quality and manufacturing specifications for soap noodles.

  1. Synthetic Detergent Powder — Machine Wash (DEAS 127-2:2022, Second Edition)

Tanzania adopted this standard as TZS 1778-2:2025/EAS 127-2:2022, providing specifications for synthetic detergent powders designed for machine washing.

  1. Skin Powders - Baby Powder (DEAS 425-2:2021, Second Edition)

This standard, now TZS 840-2:2025/EAS 425-2:2021, provides safety and quality specifications for baby powders.

  1.  Hair Creams, Lotions, and Gels (DEAS 339:2021, Third Edition)

Now TZS 882:2025/EAS 339:2021, this standard outlines quality and safety requirements for hair creams, lotions, and gels.

  1. Engine Coolant (DEAS 1102:2022)

Adopted as TZS 2079:2025/EAS 1102:2022, this standard specifies the quality requirements for engine coolants used in vehicles.

Conclusion:
By adopting these East African Standards, Tanzania continues to align its product quality regulations with EAC regional standards, promoting consumer safety, enhancing product quality, and facilitating trade within and beyond the region. These updates reflect Tanzania’s commitment to harmonized regulations and provide a clearer framework for manufacturers, importers, and exporters supplying the Tanzanian market.
