New Zealand EPA approves new herbicide for fodder beet

The New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved the use of Trifix Herbicide to control broadleaved weeds in beet crops intended for livestock feed. FMC New Zealand Limited applied to import or manufacture the product, which is a water-dispersible granule containing a new active substance triflusulfuron-methyl at 500 g/kg, in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Improved weed control and agricultural benefits

The company stated that the herbicide will improve weed management, particularly by controlling velvetleaf, resulting in a higher feed yield per hectare, improved quality, and economic and operational benefits for the primary sector.

All chemicals new to New Zealand undergo a thorough evaluation, including a comprehensive analysis of risks and benefits, considering impacts on human health and the environment.

Use restrictions and regulatory requirements

The use of Trifix Herbicide is restricted to qualified professionals in commercial settings, using ground-based application methods and complying with specified control measures. The active ingredient is already approved in Canada and the United States.

As an agricultural compound, the product also requires approval from the Ministry for Primary Industries before it can be used in New Zealand.
