GHS Labelling MHLW Regulatory Updates Safety data sheets (SDSs) Japan
Japan has recently scheduled a public consultation to update the list of chemicals and mixtures which require labelling and safety data sheets (SDS). Under the provisions of the Industrial Safety and Health Act, it is mandatory to follow the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for labelling.
This public consultation is scheduled for 20 September 2024. Non-Japanese manufacturers and importers doing business in Japan are encouraged to participate by submitting comments on the draft proposal. Stakeholders have to register to participate in this consultation.
Classification List Update
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) has proposed to add 155 substances to the classification list, which currently includes substances listed until 31 March 2024. In addition, the draft proposes to eliminate 2 substances from the list. Previously, substances classified till 31 March 2021 were added to the list.
Enforcement Dates
The 155 chemicals are expected to be added to the list by April 2027. However, the MHLW has not yet announced the date for the elimination of the following 2 substances from the list:
1. Sodium stearate
2. Phosphoric acid, triphenyl ester
