On 7 April 2026, China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) officially released five new recommended industry standards for cosmetic ingredients under Announcement No. 34 of 2026. The new standards focus on the technical requirements for biotechnology-derived and plant-derived ingredients, as well as the specifications for several widely used cosmetic raw materials. The new standards will come into effect on 1 May 2027.
Key Developments in Cosmetic Ingredient Regulation
The NMPA announced that the five standards were developed and reviewed by the NMPA Cosmetics Standardization Technical Committee. Following approval at the committee’s director-level meeting, the standards have now been formally issued.
The standards are classified as recommended industry standards, meaning they are not mandatory, but provide important technical guidance for compliance, quality control, and product development within the cosmetics sector.
Scope of the Newly Released Standards
The five standards cover both general technical requirements and specific ingredient specifications, including:
General technical requirements for cosmetic ingredients derived from biotechnology.
General technical requirements for cosmetic ingredients derived from plants.
Technical specification for Centella Asiatica extract used in cosmetics
Technical specification for acetyl hexapeptide-8
Technical specification for copper tripeptide-1
