The European Union is introducing increasingly stringent sustainability requirements for products entering and circulating within the EU market. Two major regulations at the center of this transition are the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

While CBAM focuses on the embedded carbon emissions associated with certain carbon-intensive goods imported into the European Union, the EUDR introduces due diligence and traceability requirements for commodities and products associated with deforestation and forest degradation. Together, these regulations demonstrate the EU's growing focus on supply-chain transparency, environmental performance, traceability, and corporate accountability.

The CBAM definitive regime has applied since January 1, 2026, bringing new authorization, emissions calculation, verification, declaration, and financial obligations for affected importers. The EUDR, meanwhile, is moving toward implementation, with key obligations applying from December 30, 2026 for large and medium-sized operators and certain smaller operators, and June 30, 2027 for other micro and small operators.
